avoiding the holiday hangover... maybe...

Yes, we all know alcohol dehydrates and the liver works overtime. But the holiday hangover can be sneakier than just “oops, I forgot to drink water.”

Enter acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct your body makes while breaking down alcohol. It's significantly more toxic than alcohol itself. While your body does eventually clear it out (thanks to enzymes), the backlog can cause that foggy, 3-coffees-won’t-fix-it morning. Alcohol also messes with your immune system (hello, inflammation) and disrupts REM sleep, so even if you’re in bed by midnight, your brain’s still at the party but not having quite as much fun.

To soften the blow and avoid hangover impacts:

Choose wisely. Big, jammy wines with high alcohol, heavy oak, and firm tannins (think bold reds from warm climates) can be harder on your system. We'll cover the impact of 'congeners' another time, but suffice it to say, they can make some alcohol a bit more 'owie' than others. Lighter, fresher wines (especially those with good acidity and balance) tend to be gentler companions for your body and brain.

Eat for recovery. Do your mitochondria a favour and load up on antioxidant-rich foods (leafy greens, berries, a bit of dark chocolate) to help your body mop up oxidative stress.

Replenish minerals. Alcohol flushes out magnesium and potassium. Brothy soups, coconut water, or even a pinch of salt in your water can help.

Bitters for the win. Bitter greens, citrus, or a splash of dandelion tea can gently nudge your liver along. Or, go old-school and add a few dashes of bitters to club soda - it’s hydrating, settles the stomach, and gives your liver a little herbal support.

Prioritize sleep (eventually). You may not sleep well after drinking ... but the next night? Protect it like gold. That’s when recovery really kicks in.

So yes, there’s science behind the struggle. But there are also ways to wake up feeling a little more human. Drink smart, stay curious, and make the indulgence count in the best ways.
